In any race, the racers have to drive through a set of checkpoints each lap in the correct order. In Lego Racers 2, up to 11 opponents can be chosen. It has more bricks but fewer characters to make and edit. Lego Racers 2 also has, like in the original, a car and characters designer. That isn’t this game, but Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 is definitely one of the best ones so far.Unlike the original Lego Racers, the player has more 'freedom', because the player can race or drive freely, and there are other characters that the player can talk to. Thankfully that best is very good, but we just wish that one day they’d be allowed another six months of polishing to make the definitive Lego game.

The simple answer seems to be that TT Games only has a limited time to knock each game out, and they just do the best they can. The sound mixing is still awful too, with some voices being incredibly quiet or loud, and we really can’t understand why they’ve never fixed that problem. As usual, this one is teaming with them, often requiring you to come back to a side quest later or even reload a save. There is of course an air of familiarity to all this, but the only regular feature that is entirely unwelcome is the bugs. There are plenty of games aimed purely at adults that are much less complex.

Lego reject Legend Of Zelda ideas as fans hope for Tears Of The Kingdom setsīut it’s amazing what it gets away with in the guise of a kids’ game, with multiple characters that can fly in full 3D (and aircraft for those that can’t) and a huge variety of moves accessed through just three or four buttons. Because even though it’ll take longer you can still win just by blindly punching, A standard block or dodge move would have helped too. Our only concern is that there’s no real reward, beyond a slightly higher score, for playing the game ‘properly’. The Lego games have always served as useful intros to console gaming for inexperienced players, and this is particularly good practise. These are proper boss battles with health bars that take a long time to whittle down, and often require a specific technique to beat them. They’re usually not overtly puzzle-based but instead are almost like a junior version of God Of War (we wouldn’t go quite as far as to compare it to Bayonetta). This game though is focused very much on boss battles. Recently they have been trying to diversify though, with the Star Wars games focusing on shooting, complete with their own cover system, while Ninjago introduced slightly more involved melee combat. There’s not much competition for multiformat games aimed at kids, but especially when playing co-op you need the blackest of hearts (or a pathological disinterest in whatever the theme of the game is) not to enjoy them.

The appeal of the Lego games is always the characters themselves, but the reason they’ve lasted this long is that the gameplay itself is also perfectly solid. Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 (PS4) – Squirrel Girl, Chipmunk Hunk, and Koi Boi, obviously We also applaud using Giant Man to steal visual jokes from Police Squad, and the Game of Thrones references when dealing with Maximus from the Inhumans. Some of the animation work is great too, from Iron Fist accidently burning himself when he scratches his backside to the extra effort taken to animate Ms Marvel’s rubbery body. It’s certainly easy to tell which characters and concepts TT Games have the most fondest for, with the Spider-Man Noir world being an obvious labour of love.

We were particularly enamoured by the Squirrel Girl stage, which features two of her supporting cast and specific references to one of her best story arcs, but whichever is your favourite Marvel obscurity it seems to be catered for here.

There’s also a large number of smaller levels introed by Gwenpool (since Marvel don’t have the Deadpool movie rights), which is where developer TT Games really let themselves go in terms of fan service. These are shorter than usual but also more numerous, which is for the best as they did have a tendency to go on a bit in previous games. The structure of the game is the same as other Lego titles, with the open world featuring dozens, if not hundreds, of side quests while the story primarily takes place in separate stages with the traditional fixed camera angles. And having them all squished together into one open world environment is an enjoyably surreal sight. To be honest, Kang isn’t a terribly interesting villain but the 18 different locations, from Medieval England to an alternate Earth where Hydra won, certainly add variety. The Guardians Of The Galaxy are nominally the focus of the story, which involves a supervillain called Kang the Conqueror who has taken parts of planets from across time and space and melded them together to form ‘Chronopolis’.
